The sanctuary lamp near the tabernacle burns continuously to mark the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, which is reserved in the tabernacle. In Catholic belief the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ at the consecration. Some of the Blessed Sacrament(or Consecrated bread) is kept on reserve in the tabernacle for later distribution to the sick and homebound. The Cathedral tabernacle is now surrounded by a beautiful marble and wood reredos. This structure mimics the beautiful spires of the front facade of the Cathedral, the facade lifts your eyes and spirits to meet the Lord.
